Goals and Objectives

OAPIA is the liaison between the Mayor's office and the API community.

OAPIA is involved with various advocacy activities.

  • OAPIA supports needs assessment studies of the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community to identify specific needs, e.g. health or education, that are not being addressed. The studies’ findings are shared and recommendations with relevant agencies for improvements are implemented to meet target goals.
  • OAPIA is committed to capacity building of existing community-based organizations (CBOs) that provide services to the underserved API community. Capacity building involves connecting CBOs to various organizations that provide technical assistance and research tools to locate sources of funding.
  • OAPIA seeks opportunities for public or private partnerships that may benefit CBOs and facilitates seminars or training mechanisms.
  • Once a month, OAPIA issues the eNewsletter to members of the API community, providing recent funding resources and other useful information.

On a weekly basis, OAPIA reports to the Mayor to identify pressing matters or needs affecting the API community, recommends actions needed to address those matters or needs, and suggests the time period necessary to carry out the remedy or gives a status report of the situation.

OAPIA conducts resident, youth and merchant outreach initiatives to engage, educate, and keep citizens informed about the District's programs and services. These efforts are coordinated by visiting neighborhoods to keep informed about API community concerns, and organizing informational workshops and educational events that are beneficial to the API population.
